Weeks pregnant Pregnancy week to week
11 weeks pregnant – the changes in you
The placenta is a network of blood vessels which is connected with your own body’s network of blood vessels. The baby receives through the placenta all the nutrients it needs. It also provides the child with oxygen. Food and oxygen moves from the placenta to the baby via the umbilical cord. As well as food and oxygen the placenta produces hormones. The hormone progesterone is essential to maintain the pregnancy. The hormone oestrogen enables the baby and the uterus to grow.
11 weeks pregnant – how is your baby growing?
Your baby is now 5.5 centimetres long and weighs about 11 grams. The sex of the child is already determined at conception. From 11 weeks the sex organs start to form and the teeth begin to form. Very slowly the nails start to grow. At the same time, part of the intestines are inside the umbilical cord, however in the course of the coming weeks, the intestines pull themselves back out of the umbilical cord to their proper position in the abdominal cavity.
